The Japanese Red Cedar is graceful and stately with a conical form, reddish brown peeling bark with bluish green drooping foliage. Makes a good specimen plant and can also be used as a screen. Native to Japan and China. Bonsai candidate.
When choosing a location, keep in mind that the Japanese Red Cedar has a moderate growth rate. It grows up to 90 feet in height and 25 feet in spread. It can be planted in zones 5 to 9. Requires full sun to light shade and deep, fertile, moist, acidic soil.
How To Start These Seeds:
Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 12 hours
Stratification: Cold stratify for 90 days
Germination: sow seed 1/4 inch deep, tamp the soil, mulch the seed bed, keep moist
